RELAX
Sleep & Meditation Mobile App
Overview
Our goal was to make a simple, beautiful and user-friendly app that would help people fall asleep easily. The concept of the app was to offer bedtime stories, calming music and guided meditation through an user-friendly experience. We wanted the app to have a very calm and minimalistic look, which is why we used illustrations and added dark mode by default.
I started working on this project in May 2022 and it took around 6 months to be completed. My role in this project was to design a new experience and improve the flaws that were found during the research phase. I worked with a team of developers, 2 engineers, 1 researcher and 1 product manager.
The Problem
The information architecture lacked important elements and felt incomplete. Users didn't know how to navigate through the app; everything seemed very disorganized and out of place, moreover, there was no way to filter the content which made searching more problematic for users. The images were out of context and the look of the app was very bad.
The Goals
Our goal for the project was to create an app that wouldn't distract or grab the attention of the users too much. Provide them with a flow that wouldn't make them confused of how to achieve their goals and improve the look of the app to be visually pleasant and calming for the mind.
  •  Revise and improve the information architecture
  •  Organize the content, update it and add tags so it can be filtered
  •  Make dark mode the default look of the app
Research
We did a lot of research and checked on other competitors to see what they did and what we could do better than them in order to improve the information architecture of the app as well as its experience. The whole information architecture needed to be updated in order to be logical and provide the best experience possible. We explored with a lot of wireframes until we decided on the best course for the app.
To design the best experience for users, we conducted three rounds of user testing with various tasks and looks of the app. We included dark mode by default to reduce the stress on the eyes and to decrease the exposure of the blue light, which can improve sleep quality. We made use of illustrations rather than stock images simply because they were less likely to grab the users' attention and keep them alerted. We reorganized the content and added additional information as well as tags to make the search experience easier. We refined the onboarding experience and included a way to skip the registration part just in case the users decide to use the app without an account.
Prototype
We updated the experience based on the feedback received from users, which is why the final version of the app was received so positively afterward. We managed to simplify the flow of the app as well as to make it look more minimalistic. The content was reworked and users reported that they had a better experience when searching for content.
New Experience
With the new experience, users understood the flow and were able to search for content as well as enjoy the look and feel of the app. Creating an account was quicker and easier than before and it even involved the option to skip that step altogether. All the content was filtered through tags which were always within users' reach and the illustrations together with the dark mode feature complemented each other well giving the app a pleasant look.
Results
The results of the new experience showed a higher number of downloads as well as a significant growth in new users. The amount of problems and complaints decreased while the number of positive reviews increased. Last but not least, the number of users that decided to create an account was significantly higher compared to before.
